Friends and family held a vigil for Marolien Schmidt this evening.

According to organisers of the vigil, it was held to celebrate her life as a sport woman, who participated in Ironman, and as a dynamic and excellent physiotherapist, an animal lover, supporter of the sick, her sharp sense of humour, her strong friend- and family ties, her determination to overcome Long Covid.

She was also known as the Pink Physio in Gqeberha.

She is the daughter of former Graaff-Reinet residents Sineke and the late dr. Willem Schmidt.

She leaves behind her mother Sinneke and two brothers.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, neighbours of the 40-year-old woman heard her screaming and glass breaking in the early morning hours of 9 August.

"They immediately responded and found her lying on the floor with stab wounds.  She was rushed to hospital but succumbed to her injuries," said Janse van Rensburg.

The incident happened around 01:40am in Sherlock Street.

According to Janse van Rensburg it was later established that the suspect gained entrance to the property by breaking a side window. It is unclear what was taken during the attack and police are investigating a murder case.

Anyone who can assist or provide any information relating to the murder, is asked to contact SAPS Humewood D/WO Chris Kleynhans on 082 650 7564 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or the nearest police station. All information is confidential and callers may remain anonymous.
