In our current reality there exists a multitude of streaming services that churn out series and films and documentaries left, right, and center. It’s become so saturated that, occasionally, it can feel like some of the shine has been taken off the genuine anticipation and thrill of a new release.
But still, in 2024, there are some films worth looking forward and, perhaps, even worth waiting for.
A Quiet Place: Day One (Part III)
The first film in this franchise, A Quiet Place, transcended its horror genre and delivered a masterpiece in storytelling and acting. Helmed by Emily Blunt the film was immense success in its telling of story. The second film didn’t falter in its ability to carry forward the momentum of the first. The addition of Cillian Murphy further boosted the ensemble performance.
The third in the franchise will show the first days of the alien attack while most people remain unaware of what to expect from them.
The film is scheduled for release on 28 June 2024.
Deadpool 3
The sardonic and wildly popular Deadpool returns for a third time. But this time it’s a journey to outer space that provides the backdrop.
There are plenty of rumours around as to who will appear in the film. It is confirmed that Wolverine is to be featured with other X-Men such as Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops expected to feature as well. The best part about the X-Men inclusion though is that these characters are not re-casts and are expected to be portrayed by Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, and James Marsden.
Dune 2
Slated for an opening on 1 March 2024, this film intends to tell the second half of Frank Herbert’s epic science-fiction novel.
The good news is that not only is director Denis Villeneuve still at the helm, but stars Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, and Javier Bardeom are all returning. In addition, the likes of Florence Pugh and Christopher Walken have been added to the cast.
As a reminder, Dune centers on Paul Atreides, who is born into a profound destiny and who finds himself compelled to journey to the most perilous world in the cosmos. His mission is to safeguard the fate of his family and his people in the face of sinister powers that clash over the planet’s sole reservoir of the most coveted substance known to all.
Honourable mentions
Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is planned as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road; Beetlejuice 2 will see Michael Keaton return to one of his most iconic roles; Joker: Folie à Deux is a follw-up to the Joaquin Phoenix-version of the Batman’s archenemies and will star Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn.
