A woman will be appearing in the Gqeberha Magistrates Court today, June 17, after she was arrested for allegedly faking her own hijacking.

Police spokesperson. Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that the 36-year-old woman was charged with defeating the ends of justice.

This follows an incident on Tuesday when she allegedly claimed that her vehicle, a silver Kia Picanto, was hijacked in Lavinia Street, North End while she was seated inside.

"She further alleged that two unknown men approached her, one pointed a firearm at her, forced her out of the vehicle and drove off with it," Naidu said.

"Minutes later, SAPS Mount Road members recovered the vehicle in the same street with a suspect inside. After he was detained on a charge of vehicle hijacking, investigations revealed that he was the boyfriend of the complainant and that they had an argument. After further questioning, the woman confessed to police that she had fabricated the story of been hijacked," Naidu added.

She was arrested on Wednesday, June 15 and released on warning to appear in court today. Detectives released her boyfriend.
