A team of teenage hockey players from Gauteng residing at a guesthouse in Beverley Grove in Nelson Mandela Bay, were victims of a burglary in the early hours of this morning, May 1.

According to police information, some of the hockey players retired to their rooms earlier in the evening, last night at approximately 22:00. At about 00:30, two girls that were sharing a room, were awakened by three unknown males in their room. One had a firearm and the other two had knives. The hands of the two girls were tied with cable ties and their room ransacked. A short while later, two other teenagers were ushered into the room and also bound with cable ties.

Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that the suspects were surprised by the manager and other team players who had entered the guesthouse through the sliding door.

"The manager screamed and the suspects ran out through the sliding door. No shots were fired and no one was injured. Clothing, cellphones, sim cards, laptops, a Wi-Fi router, an iPad and cash were taken. Entry was gained by forcing open the sliding door," Naidu said.

She added that Kabega Park detectives are on the hunt for approximately six male suspects. She also said that the players are between the ages of 16 and 20 years old.

"A case of business robbery is under investigation. Police are urging second-hand goods dealers and the community to be observant and heedful when anyone approaches them to sell any of the abovementioned items. Buying stolen property is an offence and anyone who receives stolen property may be charged and prosecuted," she said.

The community is advised to contact SAPS Kabega Park on 041 397 6802 or any other police station or 10111 centre as well as Crime Stop on 08600 1011 immediately.
