The Eleanor Murray Residence in Woodstock is in desperate need of a new wheelchair for one of its eldest residents.

Denise Vigus, an administrator at the home, says Dulcie Rathbone (101), affectionately known as “Aunty Peggy”, slipped and fell a few weeks ago and cracked her femur.

Vigus says: “Aunty Peggy is still very independent and does things for herself. A few weeks ago, she slipped and fell and was rushed to hospital where they repaired her cracked femur.”

She explains that Rathbone was hospitalised for about a week and then discharged but says the centenarian now struggles to move around without a wheelchair.

“She is recovering quite well. Aunty Peggy is such an amazing woman and so strong. She still wants to do things for herself, so a wheelchair is much needed.”

Rathbone celebrated her milestone birthday in May this year

Vigus explains that they currently rent a wheelchair, an extra monthly expense.

“This is not sustainable as she needs her own wheelchair. She likes going for walks and must now make use of the walking aid. She loves doing exercises. We are appealing to anyone to please donate a new or a second-hand wheelchair to her. She is quite small, so it needs to be between 14 and 16 inches.”
