"Our communities don't need malls or police stations. We need schools and NGOs like Read to Rise."
So says West End Primary School principal Clive Arries.
Speaking at the 10th anniversary of the literary organisation, at the school today (19 September), Arries described Read to Rise as a lighthouse.
The non-governmental organisation was founded by author Athol Williams and his wife, Tarryn Lock, to combat the literacy crisis in Mitchell's Plain.
They authored the Oaky range of books which have been provided free of charge to primary school learners in the foundation phase.
To date, they have reached 300 000 children.
