A quote by Katie Thurmea reads: “We take photos as a return ticket to a moment otherwise gone.”

That is exactly what photographer Noortje van Wulfen wanted to achieve when she granted 15 residents from Neighbourhood Old Age Homes (Noah) in Woodstock the opportunity to have a free portrait taken with their families.

On Saturday 16 March, the Noah Corner Shop based on the corners of Regent and Essex streets was buzzing as families dressed in beautiful outfits pitched up to have their pictures taken.

A kind gesture that left smiles on many faces.

One of those who could not contain their excitement is Dorothy Waggenstroom (63) and her husband David (67). They had their photo taken with their five children.

The pair has been living at one of the Noah residences in Woodstock since November last year. To them, capturing a moment with all their kids present was a “heartwarming” experience.

Dorothy said: “It means a lot. My daughter always said we never had a family portrait. This is like a family ID photo; we can keep it forever. We are so happy and grateful to Bonny (Bonny Diener, Noah Woodstock Centre Manager: Happiness programme) and the photographer for organising this.”

Van Wulfen said the aim was to offer the seniors a lasting memory. “I think every family should have a printed photo of themselves because it’s important to preserve memories and keep them alive for those who are not here anymore. It is important to be reminded of your identity and the community you are a part of.”

She said seeing their facial expressions was exciting. “I think seeing your own family in print adds a special layer. They are beautiful and special, and I hope their portraits will help them keep the memories alive.”

Commenting on the occasion, Diener said: “Senior people in Old Age homes never have this kind of bond with their families. It is a heartwarming opportunity for our residents, and it has never happened here.

“It is a lovely opportunity, and I told our residents this is a beautiful legacy they can leave behind because their families will cherish it when they are no longer there. This is all thanks to Noortje,” she concludes.
