The former president of the Goodwood Merriman Lions Club, Jamie Conway, released her first book called 2 A.M. Debris on Wednesday 7 February.

According to Conway, 2 A.M. Debris is a collection of poetry that tells the story of a lesbian woman utterly consumed by material love. What follows is the extinguishment of those flames, and what remains – her ash and debris after the fire of passion – is scattered by the winds of change.

“She takes a long journey to find the light within, and readers follow her footsteps from the shadows, feeling every shaky breath and burning heart along the way. This is a story of human nature; a love letter from the writer to the universe. Explore worlds of light and dark in these raw pages, aching with the desire to exist beyond what we are, and feel more connected to your humanity,” explains Conway.“My poetry is about the human condition, feeling more connected to our roots and the raw emotions under the surface. Ultimately, this collection is about different kinds of love, the fire and the cold, the toxic and the healthy, the real and the imitation. Then, discovering more about who you are along the way,” says Conway.

According to the writer, halfway through writing the collection, she realised that as humans, we don’t experience love – we are love. “And how difficult it is to love the essence of who we are, every dusty corner, and the world around us, regardless of its chaos and disorder. Finding that beauty, that light is a dark journey. But at the end of it all, our people – the friends, the family, the lovers – they each light a match to guide our way through the darkness.”

Conway’s presidency term with the Merriman Lions Club came to an end last year. She says that she now focuses on finishing her master’s degree, her book, and her work. “I’d love to return this kind of charity when things die down a little. In the meantime, I’ve done a bit of community work here and there in my spare time. Every little bit counts!” says Conway.
