There are things you don’t imagine seeing together, like brandy and water, cake at a braai or gospel and rap.

But an artist from Ravensmead has just released a new gospel rap single and believes “the two go together just fine, thank you.”

Dugan Boer, also known as D-Flow, started rapping in Grade 3, but in a whole different genre.

“I had a friend who introduced me to rap music, and I started writing my own and recorded my first song in 2013 with a friend when we were in Grade 6. Afterwards I recorded a lot of songs and featured some of my friends in my community at that time. But that time I was rapping about the lifestyle and about partying and love, and struggling to survive.”

Gift

In 2018 he accepted Jesus into his life and decided to quit the rap game, because he thought he couldn’t rap in church. ”But then my pastor encouraged me and told me not to throw my gift away, but to use it and rap about the Lord Jesus Christ.

“So I wrote my first gospel song and named it ‘Talents’, where I rap about using one’s gift for God and to do things for God. I started writing more and more gospel songs and performed every Sunday in church, and I was rapping at open-air functions, gospel concerts and 21st-birthday parties.”

Boer sees his art as a form of preaching, but to a beat!

Dugan Boer, rapper from Ravensmead.

“When you listen to my songs you will hear the Word of God in them. I’m preaching, but to a beat so more young people can listen to it and be saved. Lots of young people, when they hear a beat and a boy rapping gospel to a beat they come to the open-air service where the pastor addresses and reaches them, and they are saved because they come only to listen to the rapping, but then they also stay to receive the Word. I believe gospel rap is like a magnet.

“People in my community accept gospel rap and love my music, but most children are listening to gqom music and not to gospel. That is why I decided to write my new single to a gqom beat so that when the children listen to the beat they will be interested in listening to the lyrics and while doing so listen to the Word of God.”

New single

His new single’s name is “Dis Leka Bydi Here”. “I wrote it to a gqom beat and released it on my YouTube channel, ‘D-flow. Die Mondstuk’. I want the song to reach a lot of people and a lot of youngsters, just so they can listen to the song to hear that it is not boring to serve the Lord but it’s leka to serve the Lord.

“My plans for the future are to record albums and music videos, and to do a tour where I go to every place here in Cape Town and also out of Cape Town. I also want to start my own recording studio so I can help other gospel artists to record and release their songs ’cause I know the struggle of writing a lot of songs, but not getting the recorded.

“I struggled for a long time to record my singles, but now my struggle is over. I rap only about Jesus, the love of Jesus and about my life and how God changed it. My music is based on the Word of God and my main message is always to tell people to serve the Lord and give Jesus a chance in their lives.”
