The case against a man who allegedly fired shots at a female driver in Durbanville in suspected road rage, will appear in court again on 2 October.
The accused, Juan Truter (45), previously from Brackenfell, handed himself in at the Durbanville police station on 6 September and was warned to appear in Bellville magistrate’s court the next day.
The case was postponed to 2 October for further investigation, says Capt Marchel Rhode, spokesperson for the Durbanville police.
Truter appeared on a charge of malicious damage to property after he allegedly fired shots at the vehicle of Sharon van Wyk from Durbanville after she has flashed her vehicle’s lights at him.
According to Rhode it is strongly suspected that the shots were fired with a gas pistol or BB gun, and not a firearm.
The female driver, Sharon van Wyk, posted a video on social media about the incident, requesting eyewitnesses and people with video footage of the incident to come forward.
In a second video posted this past Friday, she said two other people have contacted her after her first video about the incident, claiming they were involved in similar incidents with the accused.
“We are working together, along with a legal team and a few other entities, to ensure that justice is served,” she said.
In her first video, which was shared many times, she says she was about to pick up her children after school when the driver of a white Mercedes-Benz almost crashed into her from the rear when she stopped in Wellington Rad to turn right into Paul Kruger Street.
“He had been driving at a very high speed and had gone straight from the turning-only lane. I flashed my lights to the driver to alert him and I then turned into Paul Kruger Street,” she says.
The man followed her and after she turned into Protea Way, she noticed in her rear-view mirror that the driver pulled across the T-junction, opened his window and fired at her.
The “bullets” hit her vehicle in the back lights and on the window spoiler, she says in the video.
