A student’s drive to help others has led to a revolutionary new app.

The app, Student Wise, connects learners with qualified tutors.

“Our user-friendly website and automated WhatsApp chatbot make booking sessions effortless,” said Mokone Mmola (31), a student who helped create the project.

“You can access pre-recorded tutorials on demand or through a subscription for continuous learning. Get homework assistance, tests and classes on WhatsApp with instant evaluation and personalised support.”

Mmola is currently completing his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Mmola, from Limpopo, said the idea started at Enactus UWC, which he is a member of. The non-profit organisation uses entrepreneurship to improve the quality of life for others.

It brings students, academics and business experts together to create projects across the globe.

“I joined a group of students who sought to solve problems in the education sector. Since MTN had a digital innovation challenge in the same sector, we entered the competition under Enactus UWC.”

Student Wise was one of the top 10 out of 25 projects in MTN’s Innovation Challenge and received project funding of R25 000 as well as laptops for everyone in the team.

Mmola is a high achiever. He was honoured as one of Africa’s Top 100 Brightest Young Minds 2022, he has received accolades for his work at the Golden Key Society for the top achievers at universities and was honoured by the university for his leadership.

He has also written a novel called Exposé, which “addresses challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community on a daily basis.”
