Minutes before a mother was about to pick up her children after school last Wednesday afternoon, a man, presumably in an incident of road rage, opened fire on her vehicle just off Wellington Road in Durbanville, Cape Town.
The Durbanville police is investigated a criminal case and is looking for eyewitnesses or video footage of the incident.
Almost crashed
The driver of a white Mercedes-Benz – a man in his 30s or 40s – almost crashed into her from the rear when she stopped to turn right into Paul Kruger Street.
“He had been driving at a very high speed and had gone straight from the turning-only lane. I flashed my lights to the driver to alert him and turned right into Paul Kruger Street. It was only after the first four-way stop, when I was approaching the T-junction in Protea Way, that I realised the driver in the Mercedes-Benz was now chasing after me,” she says.
Two shots
“At the T-junction I made a left turn (into Protea Way). It was then that I noticed in my rear-view mirror that the driver pulled across the T-junction, opened his window and fired at me,” she says.
“He fired twice – hitting my vehicle in the back lights and on the window spoiler. I have never been more terrified in my life. All I was thinking was, that thank God my children were not with me,” she says.
She urges people to check the footage of their security cameras for any evidence to identify the perpetrator. She was driving an old shape gold Fortuner.
According to Col Theo Fisher, spokesperson of the Durbanville police, a case of malicious damage to property is being investigated at this stage.
Gas pistol
Fisher says it is suspected that the “firearm” that was used in the incident, was not a real firearm, but a gas pistol.
