The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South is focused on uplifting the community in any way it can.

They also need to keep the members engaged and offer prospective new ones a varied and entertaining programme at the club’s weekly meetings. Recently this has taken the form of talks by some very accomplished legal minds.

Marius Stander has been a State Prosecutor for over 28 years. His list of successful prosecutions reads like the South African who’s who of high-profile cases, resulting in getting many hoodlums, murderers and swindlers locked up for very long stretches.

“Stander’s talk was a fascinating insight into the work of a State Advocate, highlighting how his niche market is solving cold cases, guiding police investigations to eventual prosecution,” said Alan Reynolds, president of The Rotary Club of Uitenhage South.

“During the evening it just wasn’t possible for to Stander to tell everything, so the members went away with his awe-inspiring potted CV which is almost a book in itself.”

Last week it was the turn of Tasneem Fredericks. She is a social justice and transformation activist, and a person with a list of achievements which demonstrate the massive successes of those who quietly walk amongst us.

However, Tasneem’s talk wasn’t about those achievements or her international legal activism, it was about her passion. She is deeply involved in promoting female hygiene for teenage schoolgirls and recently trained for, and took part in, a trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro to raise awareness and funds.

“With guest speakers like this, and many others the members of the club are not only enthralled but motivated to go jointly forward and achieve the Rotary motto of ‘Service above Self’,” said Reynolds.
