Music is in the Willemse blood, so it’s no surprise that 13-year-old Alzanedrio Willemse fell in love with music at a very young age, and ended up learning to play the trumpet.
“Growing up in the small town of Kariega, I’m not very exposed to a lot of musicians and professional instrument players. But two years ago when I was 11 years old, my dad taught me how to play the trumpet and I haven’t looked back since,” Willemse said.
Although he’s still in primary school, Willemse is already convinced that when he grows up, he wants to become a professional trumpeter. “I love this craft, and I know that with consistent hard work, I can become a success, and hopefully an inspiration for everyone else who wants to make a career out of their passion,” the young man added.
When he’s not in school during the week, young Willemse can be found in front of different audiences with trumpet in mouth, “I play at different community events, and at church most of the time. I love playing at church,” he added.
His favourite song to play is The Church has one Foundation. “It’s a beautiful, spiritual song, and one of the first songs I played when learning how to play.”
Apart from the support he gets from his family, school and community, Willemse’s friends are also some of his biggest cheerleaders. Most of them all play different instruments too, and the group often practise together.
“When I play at church, even some of my friends who don’t usually go to church come to support me. I’m so grateful to them. I pray that God blesses all of us, so that we can be great musicians, inspire a lot of people, and make our parents proud,” Willemse concluded.
