A two-year-old boy has died following a shack fire in the Kingstown Informal Settlement in Despatch during the early hours of this morning, April 30.
Just after midnight, the owner of the shack woke up to the smell of smoke and fire and ran out of the shack to get help.
Police spokesperson, Col. Priscilla Naidu, said that members of the community helped the man try and save his family.
"Seven people were assisted, however, when the shack was completely engulfed by the fire, they realised that one child was still not accounted for. Little Adriaan Leeuskieter perished in the blaze," Naidu said.
It is suspected that a candle may have been the cause of the fire.
Police are investigating an inquest.
