The official list of priorities that South Africa, as chair for the 15th BRICS summit, has declared are different from the list of talking points that many think will be on the agenda for the heads of state closed-doors meeting (excluding Russia, of course).

South Africa plays host to the first summit post-lockdown to be held in-person with the three previous versions held virtually. The annual summit rotates among the five nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, with this being the end of the third cycle. It will be held in Johannesburg from 22-24 August. BRICS events, meetings and forums have been happening throughout the year.

The official theme is "BRICS and Africa", focusing on accelerated growth, sustainable development and inclusive multilateralism. The five priorities that South Africa has chosen include partnerships on an equitable just transition, education and skills development, discussions on the African Continental Free Trade Area, post-pandemic socio-economic recovery, and real reform of global governance institutions including the participation of women in the peace process.
