The judgment by the Constitutional Court regarding the Electoral Amendment Act, which was challenged by independent candidates, now gives independents a fair opportunity against political parties.
Professor Daryl Glaser, from Wits University and member of the ministerial advisory committee that advised Parliament on the Electoral Act, says that independent candidates "will have a better chance of getting into Parliament under this system than they would under most electoral systems".
He adds:
