Conflict between the government and citizens is not unique as it is similar to conflict in all relationships. If the ANC-led government shows benevolence and improves aptitude, it may turn things around, writes Howard Feldman.

If South Africans had to list their relationship status with the government, it would likely read: "It's complicated." We oscillate from past moments of euphoria and hope to moments of despair and horror, from extreme pride and optimism to shame and hopelessness.
