US President Joe Biden has a soft spot for South Africa, but that didn't stop him implementing a travel ban as political problems at home dominated, writes John Matisonn. Biden's disapproval rate among the American public is rising as they become more critical of his handling of the Covid-19 virus and he faces challenges to vaccine mandates.

South Africa has remained in world headlines since revealing the Omicron variant of the coronavirus last week, praised for its responsible global citizenship and its exceptional science. It's been a good week for South Africa on the international stage.

Many also supported President Cyril Ramaphosa's stern rebuke of nations that punished instead of rewarding South Africa for its help. But South Africans should not be naïve. No matter how effusive the praise, there is reason to believe governments will do the same thing again in similar circumstances.
