South Africa will be joining 40 counties around the world that will all be holding elections. 2024 has been labelled as "democracy’s Superbowl" by some commentators, writes Qaanitah Hunter. She examines some of the global political trends. 

2024 is expected to be a busy election year, not only for South Africa but for 40 countries aound the world.

Next year boasts a packed election calendar ranging from one of the world's oldest democracy (the US) to the largest democracy (India). Even the youngest democracies (Tunisia and South Sudan) are set to vote. Some commentators have labelled 2024 as "democracy’s Superbowl" as some 40% of the world's population are due to elect new leaders.
