Service delivery failures in Johannesburg are eroding the once-flourishing City of Gold. The gas explosion that tore through the central business district last week is a blaring illustration of Joburg's collapse.
But the problem is bigger than the CBD blast - pothole-strewn roads, dilapidated buildings, dry traps, faulty power supply, busted traffic lights, and garbage littering the streets - everywhere you look there are signs of decay.
Who is to blame for the broken city and its crumbling infrastructure? Have turbulent coalitions and revolving mayors contributed to the metro's ruin?
How are Joburg residents surviving the dysfunction within municipality, and what will it take to salvage the iconic economic capital which has lost its glow?
If you live in Johannesburg, News24 would love to find out how you feel about the city. Write to us and your submission could appear on our website for this week's edition of Friday Briefing.
Your submission must be about 100-250 words, and must include a head and shoulders picture of yourself along with your name and surname.
Email your submission to opinions@news24.com and News24's opinions editor, Vanessa Banton, will select the ten best submissions for publishing in this week’s Friday Briefing.
The deadline for submissions is Thursday, 27 July at 10:00.
