Is South Africa ready for a coalition government without the ANC? Will the Springboks beat the odds and achieve Rugby World Cup victory again? And when will load shedding end?

We're only weeks away from the On the Record Summit, in partnership with Nedbank, News24's thought leadership event tasked with answering the most pertinent questions gripping the country.

The Johannesburg leg of the summit, which takes place at the Kyalami International Convention Centre on 31 August, is the second such event hosted this year after a successful Cape Town run in May.

News24 editor-in-chief Adriaan Basson and his team of top editors and journalists will join the stage with panellists like ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba, former Springbok rugby coach Jake White, Business Leadership SA CEO Busisiwe Mavuso and the country's anti-corruption czar, Advocate Andrea Johnson from the Investigating Directorate.

The full-day summit will feature thoughtful panel discussions on a range of issues, including the 2024 general election, the war on truth, the country's economic outlook, the state of load shedding, a lurking mafia state, the future of employment in a time of Artificial Intelligence, and the Springboks' chances of bringing home the William Webb Ellis Cup in October.

The country's top business, political and civil society leaders will be part of the discussions, which all centre on the next phase of South Africa's development.

Here's a look at some of the speakers we've locked in:

  • Herman Mashaba, ActionSA leader and former Joburg mayor
  • ANC second deputy SG Maropene Ramokgopa, the youngest minister in Cabinet
  • July Ndlovu, CEO of the Anglo coal spinoff, Thungela Resources
  • Leila Fourie, the CEO of the Joburg Stock Exchange
  • Julian Rademeyer, an organised crime expert from GI-TOC
  • Dion Chang, renowned futurist and founder of Flux Trends
  • Jake White, Bulls director of rugby and former Springbok coach

Here's a look at some of News24's confirmed contributors:

  • Pieter du Toit, author of ANC Billionaires and New24's assistant editor for investigations and in-depth news
  • Qaanitah Hunter, author of Eight Days in July and News24's assistant editor for politics and opinion
  • Sikonathi Mantshantsha, former Eskom spokesperson and writer-at-large for News24 Business
  • Karyn Maughan, News24's specialist legal writer and a respondent in former president Jacob Zuma's private prosecution bid
  • Jeff Wicks, News24 investigative journalist who jointly won this year's Taco Kuiper Award for his Silenced series
  • Kyle Cowan, author of Sabotage and News24's investigative journalist, whose beats include state capture and Eskom
  • Lloyd Burnard, News24 Sport editor and author of Miracle Men

Last year’s sold-out-event saw Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, and former Eskom CEO André de Ruyter outlining their plans and thoughts on how to get South Africa back on track.

Much has happened since then and we will check the pulse of the nation on what to expect in the months preceding the watershed 2024 general election.
