After a while, it’s not uncommon for our devices to feel like digital family members. We become accustomed to their strengths and weaknesses and are well-versed in their quirks and what is sure to upset our devices. This familiarity can often make us blind to knowing when it’s time for an upgrade, especially when it comes to our trusted PCs and laptops.

However, like all things, there comes a time where you need to hit refresh and regain control over your digital life with a brand new and speedy device. Here are seven ways to tell it’s time for you to upgrade your laptop:

It simply refuses to start up and needs a lifeline

This one goes without saying, if you’re digging your finger into the power switch repeatedly to no response – it might be time to call it and start looking at a new laptop. Similarly, if your laptop is living tethered to a lifeline of power and dies shortly if unplugged, it’s time to consider getting a new laptop with a fresh battery that lasts anywhere and anytime.

The screen is giving you an abstract or impaired display

If your screen is marred by a web of cracks or always glitching in one way or another, investing in a new laptop is long overdue. Treat yourself and say goodbye to squinting at a damaged screen.

The operating system and security software are outdated

So, you’ve had your device for several years and see you’re super behind on operating system or security software and can’t access the newer versions - it’s time to get a new device. It’s important to keep your laptop updated and secure - for your safety and the safety of your data.

You could heat your work lunch on its base and are too familiar with the backtrack of fans

If your laptop heats up quickly or is abnormally warm to the touch on some parts of the base, it’s time to hit refresh and get that new device. An overheating laptop is reflective of poor or even broken internal cooling fans or damaged vents, and if your laptop’s fans are exhausting themselves and working overtime while being exceptionally loud as you work – it's time for a new device.

You’re breaking your fingers tapping on the keys

We are all familiar with an occasional key jam on a laptop, especially if there’s a grain of sand or something inhibiting its movement. But if you find that this is a frequent and common issue on your keyboard, it’s time for a rethink and a refresh.

Applications take forever to load and it frequently freezes

If you spend most of your working day facing off with the pinwheel or loading bar of doom, it’s time for a new device. Older computers and their processors tend to struggle when it comes to handling newer software and keeping up to speed with the change. Likewise, if your laptop is grappling with multi-tasking or processing several apps and browser tabs open at once, it’s time to consider looking for a new laptop.

It’s more cost effective to replace than repair

Of course, if you’re looking to resolve your laptop issues and find the cost is about the same or more than the cost of a new laptop – you may as well invest in a new laptop that will solve your needs and then some.

These are just some ways to know it’s time for a much-needed laptop upgrade, however, you don’t need to wait until it’s too late. If you’ve had your laptop for a while and simply need something that runs a bit faster, has some more storage space, or will boost your working morale – there’s no harm in investing in a new device and trading in your old one.
