At a secret location in the heart of the richest square mile in Africa, the who’s who of Jo’burg gathered to raise a glass and celebrate the handcrafted luxury that is Don Julio 1942.

The premiere Club 1942, hosted in Sandton on Saturday night, was resplendent with South African high society, luxury vehicles, priceless jewels and premium tequila to match. Celebrities like Bonang and Zakes Bantwini were in attendance to celebrate the rich cultural heritage—and modern-day cultural gravitas—of luxury tequila brand Don Julio.

The story of Don Julio 1942 and the man behind it, tequila-maker Don Julio González, is one steeped in history and Por amor (for love of) tequila. The Don Julio brand was created to celebrate González’s 60th birthday. In fact, the towering shape and soft inward curve of the agave plant's leaves are mimicked in the iconic Don Julio 1942 bottle.
“Don Julio Gonzales was very particular about how he made his agave, how he farmed it and how he made his tequila. He was so committed to this that, early on, he would be the one farming the land because he didn’t have employees,” said Don Julio brand manager Mpimy Mashimbye

“That sort of devotion only comes from a place of love, it is Por amor and it lives on to this day because we have not changed the way we make our tequila.”

To celebrate González and his iconic Don Julio 1942, guests were chauffeured to the very first Club 1942 in high-end Mercedes Benz vehicles on Saturday night. Upon arrival, guests were wowed by a jaw-dropping, diamond-encrusted 1942 bottle, created by Nungu Diamonds. And that was just the beginning.

“What we are doing tonight is building the entire world of luxury that 1942 stands for. When you look at 1942, it is the epitome of Don Julio’s love for tequila,”Mashimbye said.

A riot of flavour

Guests imbibed in a striking variety of tequila cocktails, rich in Mexican flavour and spices—completely eschewing the misplaced belief that tequila is a drink made for “shots”.

With 12 years experience as a mixologist, bar manager Mnqobi Hlophe said it’s the ageing process and the treatment of the agave that sets 1942 apart from other high-end tequilas.

“Apart from its deliciousness, Don Julio has a smooth texture and a rich history. They have never lost the traditional way of making it. The aging of 1942 is what makes it special,” Hlophe said.

Guests in attendance were treated to bottles of 1942, which retails around R6 000. One sip of the heady tequila, and they were met with sweet notes of vanilla, with hints of almond, chocolate, and nuts—mixed with cinnamon and slight oak on the nose. It’s extraordinarily smooth because it’s created from choice blue agave (hand-selected and farmed for six to ten years) and because it is aged slowly.

Fresh oysters and sushi proved to be the perfect accompaniment to the sophisticated drink.

Then, it was time to party.

For the love of the party

At around 9pm, the curtains dropped and Club 1942 was officially opened.

Club 1942 epitomised luxury. Guests mingled between the iconic Mercedes Benz G-wagon and danced to a star-studded line-up which included Grammy winner Zakes Bantwini and the king of amapiano Kabza De Small. The evening’s host, the queen herself Bonang Matheba, dazzled in a knock-out red dress.

"If you are a follower of liquor you know that tequila is having a moment globally, so to be part of Don Julio 1942, the finest tequila in the world, is beyond noteworthy,” Matheba enthused.
