Winter is upon us, and it is the ideal time to pair warm, hearty meals with a wonderful quality red wine.

Be sure to fill your wine cabinet with the following winter reds:

Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2020

Kleine z

Cabernet sauvignon is the heartbeat of Stellenbosch, and the Kleine Zalze Vineyard Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a proud example of the best that the region has to offer. The recent Grand Gold accolade from Concours Mondial de Bruxelles for this special wine is testament to Kleine Zalze's commitment to this noble red grape. The wine carries distinctive Stellenbosch cabernet sauvignon flavours of blackcurrants and plums with a hit of fynbos with supple fine tannins – sophistication and elegance in a glass.

Reserve Tempranillo 2020

Niel Joubert

This deep burgundy coloured wine by Niel Joubert Estate Winesshows subtle herbal aromas supported by rich caramel notes and concentrated dark fruit. Fleshy and well-rounded, it shows intense dark fruit, mocha, and caramel flavours on the palate. Subtle sweetness, balanced acidity and structured tannins make for a wine with finesse. A total of 60% of this wine matured in new French oak barrels for 16 months. This wine also received an outstanding 4.5 stars in the Platter’s Wine Guide.

Robertson Wines: The Blend

The blend

To enhance your winter experience, Robertson Winery introduces The Blend, specially curated for your enjoyment during the cosy season. This intimate combination of sumptuous blackberry fruits from cabernet sauvignon united with the spice of shiraz, is an inseparable blend of two cultivars that thrive in the lime-rich soil of the Robertson wine valley. Best paired with lamb, roasted meats, chicken, pasta and steak. This wine is even better with friends. Available at selected stores or online.

Blake Family Wines

Malbec

Blake Family Wines is known for producing quality single vineyard Malbecs at affordable prices. In 2022 their Malbec was the SA Terroir winner in the district (W.O. Cape Town). A deep velvet red with a touch of garnet on the rim, this rich and full wine offers soft tannins and a good mouth feel with vibrant aromas of mocha and dark chocolate. It’s the perfect wine for the winter in front of a fire. Buy it directly from the cellar, online and at selected stores. Visit www.blakefamilywines.com.

Nederburg Baronne

winter wines

Taste the soon-to-be-released 2022 vintage of succulent, spicy Nederburg Baronne. With a recommended retail price of R85, it will be available in-store and online from early August. Now 50 and still fabulous, the Baronne is still as in demand and critically acclaimed as it’s been from the first vintage in 1973. This cabernet sauvignon/shiraz blend keeps getting the thumbs up. If you were to calculate the number of bottles enjoyed in South Africa today, it would be the equivalent of one opened every 15 seconds!

Under Oaks Shiraz 2017

UnderOaks

Born under ancient oak trees, nurtured in the vineyards where grapes were hand-picked and then carefully crafted in the cellar … Under Oaks took three leaves; the oak for origin, the vine for the grapes and the cork oak to bring closure on a dream turned reality. This shiraz was matured in French oak for 24 months and boasts an attractive ruby red colour. Aromas of spice, toast and white pepper are followed by smooth tannins and rich berry flavours with a long, smooth finish.

Villiera

Villiera

Villiera was one of the first South African producers to release a single varietal merlot in 1989. Their continued focus on the single varietal has ensured that the Villiera Merlot is consistently recognised for its exceptional quality and remains their bestselling red wine. The 2021 Villiera Merlot boasts a 4 star Good Value rating from the Platter’s Wine Guide, a SAWi Grand Gold and a Gilbert & Gaillard International Challenge Double Gold. The wine is available in the Villiera online store at www.villiera.com.

Van Loveren

van loveren

Van Loveren’s stunning oak-matured pinotage has seductive aromas of roasted coffee beans leading to flavours of blackberry and mulberry with a rich, dark chocolate finish. This wine is available at most retail outlets or visit their website. The retail price is R90.

Le Pommier

le Pommier

Le Pommier Wine Estate is located on the Helshoogte Pass in Stellenbosch. Jonathan, the estate’s resident bull, had a big attitude and was also quite mischievous. One year he broke into the malbec vineyard and consumed most of the crop to illustrate his good taste. With a small amount of malbec left, the first limited Jonathan’s Malbec was produced. The wine shows full body, but finely textured tannins, well rewarded with a few years of bottle maturation. It is available from the farm itself (wine@lepommier.co.za) and the website at R180 per bottle. They also provide delivery in South Africa.
