A Chinese consul asked South Africa's top parliamentarians to engage MPs and political parties with regard to the issue of Taiwan and the One China Policy.
The Taiwanese have been lobbying MPs, especially from opposition parties, to attend events hosted by the Taiwanese Embassy, such as Taiwanese National Day celebrations.
In October last year, the deputy chairperson of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), Sylvia Lucas, and Tang Changan, the acting Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Cape Town, met to explore ways to strengthen relations on a Parliament-to-Parliament level.
