Members of the Al Jamah-ah party advocated that the inspector general of intelligence's hand be strengthened in the General Intelligence Laws Amendment Bill (GILAB) to ensure greater civil oversight over the country's spooks.
This bucked the trend of much of the first two public hearings of the Parliamentary ad hoc committee processing the bill, where submissions had little to do with the provisions of the bill as citizens from Musina on Monday and Tzaneen on Tuesday listed a range of concerns, often descending into xenophobia.
The bill follows the recommendations of the Presidential High-Level Review Panel on the State Security Agency (SSA), which was chaired by former minister Sydney Mufamadi, and the State Capture Commission, chaired by Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.
