President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for a meeting between the ANC and the IFP in an attempt to de-escalate heightened political tensions between the parties in a province considered to be the battleground for the upcoming elections.

However, the IFP - which maintains its innocence around a recent incident that left ANC members injured - wants the ruling party to explain details around an apparently secret meeting called to allegedly sabotage the IFP before it would agree to a meeting with its rival.

Ramaphosa - who has apparently urged for a meeting between the two feuding parties - expressed concern over "renewed violence" in KwaZulu-Natal, saying the IFP's Zululand District Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi, and ANC provincial chairperson Siboniso Duma will have to address an incident between them, which is widely seen as escalating political tensions in the province.
