As the government looks at ways to recover outstanding e-toll fees from Gauteng motorists, lobby group AfriForum says it will give full legal assistance to the first motorist who is sued for non-payment of the highly controversial toll collection system fees.
First established in 2013, the Gauteng e-tolls were officially scrapped on Thursday, following a gazette by Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga that segments of Gauteng's roads where e-tolls operated would be stripped of their status as continuous toll roads with electronic toll points.
This follows more than a decade of open defiance by motorists and civil organisations who refused to pay the e-toll fees.
