A chair of Stellenbosch University's Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) has declined to find a student guilty of sexually assaulting another student while she was drunk, because both their versions of events were equally believable.
The CDC ruled on Tuesday that both the accused and complainant's versions were "equally aligned" and they could not find that one was more probable than the other.
Instead, committee chair Sonia Human said during her ruling that she would like to offer motherly advice to both the complainant and the accused: "I hope that both of you have learnt something from all of this. I think the main thing is the role of alcohol. We have seen this time and time again so if there's a message you can share with others, it is to be careful, to be careful".
