A letter, exclusively obtained by News24, that Thabo Bester wrote to his childhood best friend describing his despair after he was sentenced to life imprisonment reveals typical conman tendencies, said forensic psychologist Dr Gerard Labuschagne.
Labuschagne was head of the police's specialised Investigative Psychology Section – the only unit mandated to profile offenders – and had interviewed Bester in 2011.
In one part of a recorded interview, the then 23-year-old Bester admitted to Labuschagne that he killed his girlfriend Nomfundo Tyhulu, but said it was an "accident" that occurred during a fight, News24 reported previously.
