The death toll after the heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal has risen to 40, while another five people are still missing. Dozens of people were left homeless, hundreds of homes were damaged and thousands of people have been affected.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, 40 people have died since the start of December as a result of the inclement weather. This is an increase from the 31 deaths reported on 3 January.
Spokesperson for the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Nonala Ndlovu, said the Disaster Management Centre also reported that the rains have left 74 people injured. About 800 households suffered damages and 247 dwellings were destroyed, leaving 47 people homeless. More than 4 000 people have been affected.
