Popular comedian and DJ, Peter "Mashata" Mabuse, was killed in a hail of bullets after he finished a performance in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to his family, Mabuse was driving a bakkie when gunmen attacked him.

Both Mabuse and his friend were shot and wounded and Mabuse later died in hospital.

In a statement, the family said: 

It is with great sadness and sorrow that we inform you of the ultimate passing of our beloved son, uncle, brother and colleague, Mr Peter 'Mashata' Mabuse.

The family said they appreciated the flood of messages of support and condolences and asked for space and time to deal with the trauma.

Appeal for information

Mabuse was also well known as a stadium announcer at Mamelodi Sundowns' home matches.

Fans took to social media on Sunday to pay tribute to Mabuse.

Details of a memorial and funeral service will be shared later in the week.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Noxolo Kweza, told News24 that Tshwane police have opened murder and attempted murder dockets following a shooting incident involving two men, aged 46 and 45 years old, during the early hours of Sunday morning.

"One victim died in hospital, while the other was injured. The two victims were driving near Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Soshanguve when shots were fired at their vehicle," said Kweza, adding that the suspects had fled and police were following several leads.

Gauteng police have appealed to anyone with information to come forward or contact 08600 10111. All information will be treated with confidentiality.
