Protests, disruptions and violence marred the start of the academic year at several universities across the country after many students complained about housing and financial exclusion.
The protests prompted some universities to suspend the academic year while others moved classes online.
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has seen a number of demonstrations, and students have called for the institution to suspend campus activities. They also demanded that students with outstanding fees be allowed to register for the new academic year.
