Four candidates who were disqualified from standing for election to posts in the executive committee of Convocation at Stellenbosch University (SU) are fighting back.

Johan Smit, Bernard Pieters, Isabelle de Taillefer, and Jan de Villiers, who were out of the running for allegedly using the institution's logo or trademark during campaigning, have demanded through their lawyers, Hurter Spies, a written undertaking that the decision to announce the results of the election process be set aside and that this be communicated to the members of the Convocation.

Their action followed an announcement on Thursday by SU registrar, Dr Ronel Retief, of a complaint they received on Wednesday of non-compliance with the procedure to nominate and elect the executive committee of Convocation, with specific reference to the use of the SU trademark.
