Scientists and doctors in the Ministerial Advisory Committee (MAC) say they lost out to actuarial scientists and economists, who were against implementing interprovincial restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19.
MAC insiders revealed there was seemingly a split within the ranks, with some disappointed that President Cyril Ramaphosa did not announce stricter lockdown measures, while others welcomed it.
"All of those enforcement measures we saw in Level 5 is what we wanted to be activated. We want the economy to be preserved, but our call for greater enforcement of Level 3 did not happen. There is a split in the MAC at the moment," a senior MAC official told News24 on Friday.
