  • A Sandton businessman died hours after gunmen opened fire on his vehicle on Thursday morning.
  • The man suffered multiple gunshot wounds.
  • The events surrounding the shooting are still unknown.

A Sandton businessman, who was shot multiple times outside his upmarket home on Thursday, has died, said Emer-G-Med spokesperson Kyle van Reenen.

A volley of gunshots alerted neighbours in Morningside to the scene of a hit-style shooting on Coleraine Drive.

The 43-year-old was pulling out of his driveway at around 09:00 on Thursday morning when gunmen peppered his vehicle with bullets.

The man's luxury German sedan showed a tight grouping of bullet holes, and his window was blown out by the gunfire.

Several residents in the plush Johannesburg suburb told News24 they heard two shots, a pause, and then four more bangs in quick succession.

The vehicle came to a stop on the verge outside his home.

Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said there were approximately five shooters.

They made their getaway in a silver-grey Hyundai ix35.

The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage.

Emer-G-Med paramedics responded to the scene.

Van Reenen said that, on arrival, paramedics found the critically injured man seated in his vehicle.

"Emergency Care practitioners worked fervently to stabilise him before he was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further care."

He died hours later due to his "extensive injuries".

"The facts surrounding the incident and the events preceding it are unclear and will form the subject of a South African Police Service investigation," he said.

News24 understands the man ran a tax consultancy in Sandton as well as other businesses.

Police closed and cordoned off the busy road around the crime scene for most of the morning, leaving many residents unable to access their homes.

By midday, detectives had started collecting evidence. Black fingerprint ink was smudged on the door of the man's white vehicle.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim was a "gentle person who was well-liked in the neighbourhood".

The police are investigating.

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect that the businessman has died.
