The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) has suspended one of its deputy vice-chancellors after "hundreds of thousands of data records" were accessed and stolen when its computer systems were hacked.

Professor Bhekisipho Twala, who was responsible for the digital transformation portfolio, was placed on precautionary suspension on 26 January, after allegedly failing to deal with and manage the aftermath of the cyber security breach.

The incident took place on 17 December 2023, but was only reported to the Information Regulator (SA) body on 4 January 2024.
