The "cartoonification" of fashion is a trend that’s fast becoming popular among designers, from the infamous Big Red Boots, Minnie Mouse-inspired pumps, to pixelated clothing, and more.
Brands are increasingly incorporating fashion with the world of cartoons and gaming. This trend has resulted in peculiar but fun clothing items and accessories that we can’t help but marvel at.
Popular brands and designers that have joined the trend include Loewe, Prada, Christian Cowan, MSCHF, and Red Wing.
We rounded up eight of the weirdest and most interesting "cartoonified" fashion items, and some are just unbelievable.
Big Red Boots
MSCHF, a clothing company known for its controversial collaborations with Lil Nas X and his "Satan shoe" has done it again. This time, they launched the famous Big Red Boots that divided the internet for weeks.
The oversized, giant shoe is described as a "Cartoon boot for a Cool 3D World", and we definitely wouldn’t wear these – even though they admittedly look very comfortable.
UGG Sugarcloud Slide
Made from soft, sustainable material, the UGG Sugarcloud Slides provides shoes that look and feel like a cloud. The midsole of the item is made of renewable sugarcane and 50% recycled rubber. This is in line with UGG’s mission to reduce its emissions by 40% per pair of shoes by 2030.
Minnie Mouse-inspired oversized pumps
In its 2023 Spring/Summer collection, Loewe unveiled a rather exciting shoe collection inspired by Disney’s Minnie Mouse.
The collection features various shoe styles, including high heels, slippers, chunky clogs, and toe sandals. However, the most notable in the category has to be the Minnie Mouse-inspired princess shoes, also seen on Kylie Jenner, and the balloon heels.
Pixelated clothing
Another one of our favourites in Loewe’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection includes the pixelated clothes. These are also described as “3D garments engineered to resemble flat, 8-bit renderings of hoodies, T-shirts, and pants”, according to Highsnobiety.
Mario Plumber boots
This shoe celebrates Super Mario’s signature ability, plumbing. Red Wing crafted the leather boot, including a rounded heel and reinforced toe box.
According to Red Wing, the heel pad is made with state-of-the-art mushroom-infused materials celebrating Mario's signature abilities.
Prada’s inflated purses and shoes
The prominent features of cartoon-inspired clothes and accessories are puffiness, bright colours, or strange shapes. These Prada bags and loafers live up to the trend with their inflated look, making them appear more like puffy things to play with than functional fashion items.
Christian Cowan’s Vegan Teletubbies boots
British designer Christian Cowan designed these luxury lime green boots inspired by the Teletubbies cartoon character Dipsy.
According to Cowan, who grew up watching the Teletubbies, combining nostalgia with his passion for fashion was a dream come true. Choosing Dipsy as the inspiration was purely because of its jolly and playful personality.
Loewe Non-crease winter collection
For its fall/winter 2023 collection, Loewe introduced various "cartoonified" items, including some artificial-looking tops, skirts and dresses. These do not crease and do not move as one would expect a flared skirt to. The dresses almost look like fondant.
