One Black Friday shopper has already spent at least R404 000 on Black Friday deals over 23 different transactions, and the day's far from over.

South African fintech company Ozow is maintaining a data dashboard for Black Friday which shows transaction statistics for payments made through the gateway.

The figures include the three customers who spent the most money.

And the R404 000 reflected was more than the combined amount that the customers in positions 2 and 3 forked out.

It is not clear what the money was spent on but multiple transactions were definitely made.

The largest single transaction for the day so far was R140 000.

The number of online transactions made is increasing rapidly every hour, according to Ozow data. There was a small spike in transactions at midnight when many deals came into effect, but it decreased in the early hours of the morning. Since 04:00 until the time of writing, transaction value and volume has been increasing steadily.

Black Friday is the name given to the Friday after the US' Thanksgiving holiday when businesses offer huge discounts on merchandise in a bid to turn a profit. The practice has caught on around the world.

South Africans are expected to spend more on essentials this Black Friday than on cheap tech, as has been the case in years gone by, according to research by the Bureau of Market Research.

The availability and prominence of e-commerce sites also mean that many consumers will be looking for deals online rather than in stores.
