South Africans have bid adieu to the autumn season, making space for all things winter - from classic coats, mid-calf silhouette boots to the ever-stylish leather jacket, and we are here for it all.

The beginning of a new season comes with some changes, be it new goals, a new job or a complete wardrobe change.

One thing about fashion is that trends go by quickly, but some winter essentials are just evergreen and must-haves in your wardrobe.

We've rounded up the six biggest trends to turn to this winter - for both men and women.

Trench coat

Have a thing for a Burberry-inspired look? A classic trench coat comes close, and you can never go wrong with it.

Trench coats are one of those timeless staples and are appropriate for different weather conditions. This item has the power to give any outfit a well-deserved enhancement and is perfect for both women and men.

Leather jacket

The biker aesthetic is another look that has stood the test of time. If it's not biker boots, it definitely has to be a cute bomber, cropped, fury or oversized leather jacket.

Leather jackets have, for a long time, been popular among men and women, and they go with everything.

Oversized blazer

Whether alone or part of an ensemble, a blazer will always be the perfect outwear statement piece for warm and cold seasons.

Blazers come in many different styles. Whether you like it fitted, cropped, monotone or oversized, you're guaranteed to have an outstanding statement piece to finish the look – and, no, blazers are not only for business.

Striped sweater

This knitted item is both season-appropriate and stylish, and it works well for both men and women.

A bonus is that they come in many different styles, from turtlenecks and oversized sweaters to mohair pullovers and half-zipper tops. There's a plethora of favourites to choose from.

Boots

Boots can be worn throughout all the seasons, but finding a comfortable pair with a manageable heel height is the way to go – if comfort matters to you.

Whether it's ankle length, mid-calf silhouette, cowboy, over-the-knee or chunky – which South Africans now call Mahindra boots – the black version is likely to look good with any outfit while keeping your feet warm.

Classic coat

A classic coat is one item in your wardrobe that will truly stand the test of time. This is one of those stylish staples everyone, and I mean everyone, should have – even toddlers.

It keeps you warm, and a good quality classic coat may carry you for the next five to 10 winters.
