Pupils at Alexandra High School in Johannesburg are in hot water after chaos broke out during Spring Day celebrations and disrupted schooling on Thursday.
In a video doing the rounds on social media, pupils can be seen in the school corridors throwing chairs to the ground floor. A cloud of smoke then emerges.
The Gauteng Department of Education said it had launched an investigation to establish what prompted the disruptions on Thursday.
1 September marks the beginning of meteorological spring, and some schools celebrate the change in season by allowing pupils to wear civvies.
Gauteng education department spokesperson Steve Mabona told News24 pupils were allegedly celebrating Spring Day when they "shockingly disrupted schooling just before lunchtime and damaged furniture, fire extinguishers, and wasted water".
Mabona said the chaotic celebrations were "against the code of conduct due to the disruption of schooling".
Pupils who initiated the celebrations would go through a disciplinary process, and a disciplinary committee would determine the outcome, said Mabona.
"Such ill-discipline will not be tolerated in our schools," he added.
The extent of the damage is still to be determined.
