Ofer Cassif will remain in Israel's parliament, after a vote to expel him – in a procedure used for the first time – failed on Monday night.
Cassif raised the ire of some of his colleagues by supporting South Africa's approach to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague, going so far as to sign a petition supporting the move. That saw him called a traitor by some, and a supporter of Hamas by others, who invoked a series of votes that culminated in Monday's vote.
Had 90 members of the Knesset voted in favour, Cassif would have been expelled from the house. The final tally was 85 in favour, and 11 against, out of a chamber with 120 members.
