The Proteas needed to do a lot of box-ticking after last week's unforgettable embarrassment.

The first was to bat out an entire day, which was done without any frills. There also was the 111-run opening partnership between Sarel Erwee (108) and Dean Elgar (41).

That was SA's first opening ton-up on the road since Alviro Petersen (54) and Graeme Smith (119) put together 138 against Australia in Adelaide in 2012.
