  • Maserati enters Formula E in 2023, returning to racing for the first time in 60 years.
  • The team partners with MSG and Venturi Racing, and will be known as Maserati MSG Racing.
  • The Gen3 Formula E cars will make as much as 600kW of all-electric power.

Almost 100 years after debuting its first racing car, the Tipo 26, at the Targa Florio, Maserati is ready to enter the world of motorsport once again. But unlike the petrol-powered car that took to the track in 1926, 2023 will be very different.

The team from Modena, Italy, has been in a slump in recent years. Be it its ageing and (very) out-of-date product line-up or struggling sales figures, the maker of desirable Italian cars failed to make an impact on the automotive world.

But a raft of changes across the entire Maserati board saw the carmaker lift itself from its slump, and the last few years have been a time of rejuvenation and revitalisation. And following the 2020 promise that it will again enter motorsport, the time has arrived for Maserati to do so.

Enter Formula E and its ninth season in 2023.

Partnership with Venturi

Maserati is no stranger to motorsport and active participation, but the company has its eyes on the future while its feet are planted in the present. With Formula E presenting the basis for the technologies that can be used in roadgoing electric vehicles (EVs), it makes sense for the Italian giant to enter the sport as it designs and prepares its next generation of road cars: EVs.

Ahead of last season's Rome E-Prix, Maserati and ROKiT Venturi Racing announced a multi-year partnership, with MSG (Monaco Sports Group) coming on board as the title partner. As such, the team will be known as Maserati MSG Racing.

Venturi, Formula E's longest-serving team, has been involved since the series' inception in 2014. It will remain an integral part of the rebranded team as it develops new innovations for the team.

The team's 2023 race car, dubbed the Maserati Tip Folgore Gen3, is based on the third generation of Formula E racecars and will offer 600kW of regenerative power. It is the first all-electric racing machine in Maserati's motorsport history, and the first race car from the Trident team in 60 years.

Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO

Davide Grasso, Maserati CEO, said: "Returning to motorsport with Formula E was a natural choice for Maserati. Indeed, we are driven by our passion and innovation. And we're happy to share this adventure with a partner that abides by the same values as we do and is looking ahead to the future, just like us. We share with the ROKiT Venturi Racing team the same determination and desire to compete and win on circuits all over the world."

The team will be headed by James Rossiter, who retired from racing in October 2021 to transition into management. The position of team principal will be a baptism of fire for the 39-year-old. The team's drivers for 2023 are Edoardo Mortara and Maximilian Günther.

Season 9 of Formula E begins in earnest on 14 January 2023 in Mexico City, Mexico. The 17-race calendar will be the longest yet, with the series visiting Cape Town, South Africa, on 25 February, for Round 5.
