  • Tag Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein will be looking to extend his Formula E championship lead in Cape Town.
  • Wehrlein and his Portuguese teammate, Antonio Felix da Costa, are visiting the Mother City for the first time.
  • Round 5 of the 2022/23 Formula E season starts at 16:00 on Saturday.

Tag Heuer Porsche's Pascal Wehrlein leads the Formula E championship standings and will be looking to extend his advantage come the end of Saturday's race in Cape Town in a first visit to the Western Cape city for both the sport and for the German driver.

For Wehrlein, who has spent three seasons with Porsche, and his Portuguese teammate Antonio Felix da Costa, it is the first time they are visiting the Mother City, and both are looking to make it a memorable experience around the streets of the Green Point precinct.

The drivers arrived in Cape Town on Wednesday morning and were immediately put to media duties, with Wehrlein having quite a commute getting up to Signal Hill.

"I haven't seen much [of Cape Town yet] because I arrived this (Wednesday) morning, and I was stuck in traffic for two hours from the airport to here," the driver said.

"But we went to Signal Hill. It was a beautiful view, saw people paragliding ... I'd like to come back because right now, we don't have a lot of time."

Excited to be here

"I am very excited to race here," Wehrlein said. "Already the sound of it - 'racing in Cape Town' - it’s amazing, and I am very happy to be here."

Though the Formula E drivers are yet to experience the Cape Town circuit, like all of them, Wehrlein and Da Costa have experienced the circuit in the simulator.

Da Costa echoes his teammate's sentiments: "Coming to a new track is always cool. There are no track records and history for us to build on, so we start from zero like every other team and driver. The track looks mega, super fun, very technical.

"I think it's going to be a fun weekend."

Porsche leads the Teams' championship with 101 points, with Wehrlein taking charge of the drivers' standings on 80 points. Da Costa is ninth with 21 points.

Cape Town hosts Round 5 of the 2022/23 Formula E season, with the race starting at 16:00 on Saturday.
