Aside from keeping Olympian Caster Semenya off the track in her favourite events - provided she does not take the mandated hormone blockers, or has major surgery - World Athletics' "victory" at the Swiss Federal Supreme Court solves few long-term problems.

The problem facing the world athletics regulator, formerly known as the International Association of Athletics Federations (frequently referred to as the IAAF), has been in existence for almost a century since women started competing in organised sports.

In the early 20^th century, the world moved from its false and discriminative notion that women "shouldn't play sports" because of some crazy beliefs like "your uterus was going to fall out", to women's sporting categories needing protection from male encroachment because of some biological advantages innate to the latter.
