In other matches, one of Africa’s five contenders Senegal stuttered to an opening match loss against Louis Van Gaal's Netherlands side, with Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen's late goals securing the win. The African champions suffered a blow when news filtered out that talisman Sadio Mane will miss the World Cup.
Defending champions France and Spain both produced emphatic victories in their opening matches. Olivier Giroud struck twice for Les Bleus in a 4-1 win over Australia, while Spain demolished Costa Rica 7-0. Ferran Torres scored a double for the 2010 winners.
Another surprise upset came during Germany’s loss to Japan, with a late Tukama Asano strike sending the Japanese fans into delirium. After the match, in an incredible moment caught on social media, many Samurai Blue fans remained in the Khalifa Stadium to clean up litter left by their group of supporters.
World Cup action won’t slow down as SuperSport continues to broadcast in 4K, with fiery encounters between Argentina and Mexico, and a European heavyweight clash between Spain and Germany on the horizon. Ghana and Cameroon will also face South American opposition in the form of Uruguay and Brazil in tough encounters.
The race for the Golden Boot is led by Ferran Torres, Bukayo Saka, Enner Valencia, Richarlison, Olivier Giroud, and Mehdi Taremi who are the joint top scorers with two goals each.
