The FIFA World Cup season is in full swing, and England's Bukayo Saka and Brazil's Richarlison are some of the players to emerge as trending footballers during the tournament’s opening matches, all available in brilliant 4K clarity on SuperSport.

Saka scored two goals in a 6-2 victory over Iran for the Three Lions and Richarlison's superb acrobatic effort capped off a two-goal performance for Brazil. All the action was broadcast on SuperSport's two dedicated 4K channels that will show all 64 matches.

4K offers eight times the number of pixels compared to the standard High-Definition (HD) offering and is the perfect way to watch fast-paced action.

Cristiano Ronaldo made history on Thursday by becoming the first male player to score in five World Cup tournaments in Portugal's 3-2 victory over Ghana, while fans also witnessed Saudi Arabia's shock victory over favourites Argentina a few days earlier.

On SuperSport we witnessed experts Michael Owen, Jay-Jay Okocha and Asamoah Gyan led by Thomas Mlambo analyse the South American team's three disallowed goals with excellent graphics and insight in 4K.

SuperSport's star-studded list of pundits includes former internationals Owen Hargreaves, Gaizka Mendieta, Bongani Khumalo, and Jaap Stam. The new high-tech studio is hosting robust debates and conversations about FIFA's adoption of AI technology to determines offside rulings.

African contenders and race for the Golden Boot

In other matches, one of Africa’s five contenders Senegal stuttered to an opening match loss against Louis Van Gaal's Netherlands side, with Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen's late goals securing the win. The African champions suffered a blow when news filtered out that talisman Sadio Mane will miss the World Cup.

Defending champions France and Spain both produced emphatic victories in their opening matches. Olivier Giroud struck twice for Les Bleus in a 4-1 win over Australia, while Spain demolished Costa Rica 7-0. Ferran Torres scored a double for the 2010 winners.

Another surprise upset came during Germany’s loss to Japan, with a late Tukama Asano strike sending the Japanese fans into delirium. After the match, in an incredible moment caught on social media, many Samurai Blue fans remained in the Khalifa Stadium to clean up litter left by their group of supporters.

World Cup action won’t slow down as SuperSport continues to broadcast in 4K, with fiery encounters between Argentina and Mexico, and a European heavyweight clash between Spain and Germany on the horizon. Ghana and Cameroon will also face South American opposition in the form of Uruguay and Brazil in tough encounters.

The race for the Golden Boot is led by Ferran Torres, Bukayo Saka, Enner Valencia, Richarlison, Olivier Giroud, and Mehdi Taremi who are the joint top scorers with two goals each.

Away from the field, Carol Tshabalala and Dwight Yorke are enjoying the sights and sounds of Qatar while reporting live to give SuperSport fans a sense of what's happening on the ground.

Unrivalled SuperSport access allowed Tshabalala to track down Nigerian legend Sunday Oliseh in Qatar, who is on a special assignment at the tournament, for an exclusive interview. The former Super Eagles captain and coach chatted about football on his home continent, developing coaches in Nigeria, and FIFA’s Technical Study Group led by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.
