The next phase in the Lions' United Rugby Championship (URC) campaign will be critical to whether they are considered to have had a successful season or not.

Going into their three-match tour of Europe - which will take in a couple of URC matches against Connacht and the Ospreys, and an EPCR Challenge Cup last 16 clash against Benetton - Ivan van Rooyen's team lies 11th on the league table and three points off the eighth place that signals the promised land of a Champions Cup spot.

The catch is, despite the deserved praise that has come their way about turning themselves into a grittier and more competitive outfit, not only did they finish 11th last season, they also - a little like Chelsea in the English Premier League - seem to have been mired in that position all season.
