In 2004 when FIFA announced South Africa as the first African nation to host the World Cup in 2010, ahead of Egypt and Morocco, it was a historic moment for the prestigious tournament but more so for the continent.
After six years of preparation for the competition, the first World Cup on African soil gave the globe more gasping moments when Spain and Netherlands took to Soccer City for the final with more than 90 000 screaming fans enjoying 120 minutes of a nail-biting football match.
Not only would South Africa host the first-ever World Cup in Africa, but a nation - Spain or Netherlands - would also be crowned champions for the first time.
